'Accalmie House' is a shelter for women and their children, victims of conjugal or domestic violence. The 'Accalmie House' assures a safe, confidential and free stay where victims of conjugal and or domestic violence may find refuge and support.
It was in 1988, following a recommendation issued during the conference 'La violence, une réalité même ici' sponsored by the CLSC des Iles, and organised by 'la SentinElle', that work got underway to establish a local resource for women, with or without children, victims of violence. Being legally registered in 1989, Accalmie House began modestly providing services of listening to, informing and referring abused women. In the spring of 1990, Accalmie House was able to temporarily rent a home that required some work to make it fully operational, and by the fall of that year, the organisation was able to offer a full range of services that corresponded to the needs of the local community in dealing with domestic violence. In the winter of 1992, Accalmie House acquired ownership of the current home.
